SON BASKI - CNBC-E / October 11, 2004
Host: Mr. Adnan Nas, the Chairman of the Turkish-American Business Association argued that the decision to be adopted by the European Commission on December 17th, for Turkey would be worse than the approaches set out in the Progress Report. Having interviewed with CNBCE at the Association's meeting, Mr. Nas talked about the impact of the possible change in the US president on Turkey. Mr. Adnan Nas, the Chairman of the Turkish-American Business Association stated that there were political words and statements in the Progress report, and when they become clearer in the Commission decision, they may turn out to be negative.
Adnan Nas: The movement of workers are overlooked with some general references; it may be more specific. Likewise, the imbalances between regions, the rights of the Kurdish minority may be a little bit more specific. But in general terms it is very favorable. As I told you in my opening speech: it is particularly important because it is the self-transformation project of the Turkish nation. I am very pleased that the transformation has started up in Turkey.
Host: Mr. Nas argued that any possible change in the US presidency office would not effect Turkey in an adverse manner. He said that "the American policy will remain the same".
Adnan Nas: I am sure that it will not cause any impact because America is really a great state. It does not only live or depend on people. There are some serious powers there. The American state will not easily change its policy particularly in terms of foreign policy. Turkey has always been a very loyal ally of America at all times. Please note that I am not saying strategic partner; but an ally. I hope that we will be a strategic partner.
Host: Mr. Nas noted that the priority is on the creation of Qualified Industry Zones in Turkey which will increase the duty-free and non-quota to the USA. |
